What you will learn in this course

Hi! Thank you for enrolling into “How to make an embroidery journal" course!

I know you’re probably excited to get started so let me briefly outline the curriculum here so that you know what to expect from every lesson you encounter on your way.

Module 1: Getting to know embroidery journals

Lesson 1.1: What is an embroidery journal and my own story of making them.

We focus on the main qualities of art journals in general and what makes them different from any other self-expression outlets. We also draw parallels with embroidery as a medium for creating art journals. I tell my own story of creating embroidery journals, and how it helped boost my creativity.

Lesson 1.2: Characteristics of embroidery journals and what you can use them for

Before you start making your own embroidery journal, there are some qualities of them that you should be aware of. Also, we list some ideas for types of embroidery journals that you can make.

Module 2: Constructing an embroidery journal

Lesson 2.1: Interfacing: benefits of strengthening your fabric.

I like to strengthen my fabric with interfacing/stabilizer and I will tell you my reasons for that. This step in making an embroidery journal is absolutely optional but is totally worth mentioning.

Lesson 2.2: Edging tutorial

We make the first page as we learn how to use buttonhole edging to protect its sides from fraying.

Lesson 2.3: Making a spread

We combine two pages together to create our first spread.

Lesson 2.4: Joining two spreads together

We learn how to grow our journal by adding more and more spreads to it.

Lesson 2.5: Making a cover

We learn how to prepare a cover for our journal and how to attach it to its body.

Lesson 2.6: Alternative method

Here we will take a look at the method of compiling a journal that is slightly different from the “standard” one described in the previous lessons. However, some of you might find it more convenient.

Module 3: PDF materials

Lesson 3.1 Guide To Buttonhole Edging (with bonuses)

Now that you’re about to make your very own embroidery journal, use this guide to help you through the buttonhole edging process. This PDF includes not only the step-by-step tutorial for buttonhole edging but also tips on how to end and start thread, and a handy lifehack.

Lesson 3.2 Cheat Sheet

If you’re a little confused about the order of making an embroidery journal, this PDF will guide you through the process in a concise way.

Module 4: Final project
